That question has been asked a million times by many different people, but mostly by people of the Christian faith.
Because they want to know what does the bible says about attending religious worship services.
It is not mentioned in the bible that going to church is required to enter heaven. First of all, let’s clear up one thing, when Jesus said “on this rock, I will build my church”, the rock he was referring to is Peter his disciple and the church he was referring to is the people who are believers/members.
Most people refer to the church as some type of worship service building, when in fact the church is the believers and/or members. In the part of the world where Jesus lived, the place where they held their religious worship services was called a synagogue. NOTE: Jesus did not say “on this rock, I will build my synagogue, because a synagogue is just a place for worship, just as a Christian worship place is just a place for worship.
So back to the question, what does the bible say concerning going to church? John 3:16. God gave His only Son so that people could have eternal life. All the people who accept Jesus’ sacrifice as payment for their sins will spend eternity in heaven. This very act destroyed the need to perform good works, which includes going to a worship service.
Although Jesus did say – Hebrews 10:25 “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching”. NOTE, Jesus did not specify where the meetings together should occur, it could be in a house, park, or almost anywhere.
I am sure some of the religious preachers and teachers explain to their members that the building where the religious service is held is not the church, but the people in the building are the church. And some of the people in that building that is called a church will not go to heaven. Jesus told people to attend a worship service because there are other good benefits in it for them.
First of all, you must understand that the so-called church buildings are nothing more than just another form of business, and all businesses operate for a profit. So, if you are a member of a religious worship service and they ask you to donate money (tithes) to help pay the bills, you should do so.
If you ask the people in the religious business this question “do you have to attend church to go to heaven?” Most of them will answer with a yes. Because if they told you the truth you probably would not go to the building, they call a church, thus not giving them your money anymore.
Most people will end up missing heaven because they believe if they go to the so-called church building regularly, paying their tithes, and do their so-called good deeds, they will go to heaven. The truth is the only way you can go to heaven is to admit that you are a sinner and acknowledge that Jesus died for your sins on the cross and ask Jesus to come into your heart, whether you attend a religious worship service or not.
Most so-called believers attend the religious worship services, so other people can see they are attending the religious worship services as if Jesus did not already know this. These people are trying to impress other people by attending the religious worship services, but that does not impress Jesus.
Matthew 18:20 – For where two or three gathered in my name, there am I with them. NOTE, Jesus did not specify where they are to get to gather. Therefore the place they get gather at must not be as significant, as some so-called believers claim it is.
